Kentucky Derby 137 and Preakness Excitement

Soaking it all in...

Derby weekend could not have been any better in any manner.  I’ve never seen a Derby run as slow as this one through the opening quarter and half mile but the run made by Animal Kingdom was amazing.  After sitting in 12th and 10th through the early going, he started making a powerful move past the rest of the field around the 1/8th pole.  It was over after that.

On Derby Day, I covered Soldat, Stay Thirsty and Animal Kingdom across the board but couldn’t hit any of the large exotics as I took Nehro out of every play.  Once again, the Oaks/Derby double was great paying over $345 on the $2 wager.

It will be very interesting to see who decides to run in Preakness Stakes in two weeks.  With the possible additions of The Factor,Dance City and Flashpoint, the race should have a lot more early speed.  Also, since Dialed In will have the opportunity to win a $5.5 million dollar bonus that they will do whatever they can to make sure that he does not take himself out of the race early this year.

Right now, I will be very interested to see how Animal Kingdom, Dialed In, The Factor and Dance City progress in the next week or two.

Potential Preakness Starters (only 14 starters make the gate): Animal Kingdom, Dialed In, Shackleford, Mucho Macho Man, Midnight Interlude, Nehro, Flashpoint, Dance City, Astrology, The Factor, Concealed Identity, Prime Cut, Saratoga Red, Sway Away, King Congie, Norman Asbjornson and Mr Commons
