Another Good Year

Animal Kingdom Pulls Away

Although I missed the mark at the betting window, the 2011 Kentucky Derby was nothing short of another great Derby weekend.  Being at Churchill Downs for my 11th Kentucky Derby and being there on Friday for the Kentucky Oaks with great friends and great weather, made for another year of good times.

It may be easy to point out what a surprise it was to see Animal Kingdom win but for me on the 2011 Kentucky Derby Trail, there just wasn’t room for any more surprises.  Even with the Needles Curse looming and the challenge of becoming the 1st Kentucky Derby winner that had never raced on dirt, Animal Kingdom proved to be game for changing history.  He definitely earned the roses.  It was good to see Jonny V earn his first Kentucky Derby victory and cherish the spotlight as he made the trip to the winners circle.

I had come across only a couple of people who assured me they would be betting this colt but if the Colt hadn’t won, I probably wouldn’t have remembered who they bet.  I was pretty content with my selections in Kentucky Derby 137 and when the horses concluded the post parade following My Old Kentucky Home, I was feeling good.  Needless to say, it just wasn’t my year.  Leaving out the winner in my exotics and missing the board with Soldat, Dialed In and Archarcharch it concluded my wagers for the day.  Overall, however, taking care of winners prior to the feature races relieved me of my misses in the Oaks and the Derby.  So in the end after breaking even, I was left without any complaints on the wagering front.

The Preakness Stakes is going to be interesting.  The field is going to be tough, especially with the crop of horses entering after sitting out the derby.  But, I won’t dismiss a Triple Crown in 2011 until I see it.  Sure I’m a loyal horse racing enthusiast but I’ve seen it denied by a nose and I know it will happen again.  Congratulations to Animal Kingdom, Jonny V, Graham Motion, and Team Valor and good luck in the remaining two legs of the crown.

Many, Many THANKS to our friends in the Bluegrass State, Kentucky Derby 137 was another good year.
