Animal Kingdom and his connections find themselves very comfortable after learning they will be breaking from the 11 Post in the Preakness Stakes. After proving in the Kentucky Derby that the colt and his jockey, John Valezquez, could navigate themselves around and through a field of 19 rivals from post 16, the 11 post should again allow them to break clean from the outside and find good position heading into the first turn.
To make things a little bit more interesting, breaking alongside him from the 10 post will be Kentucky Derby favorite, Dialed In. Drawing the least favored post positions was Astrology with the 1 post and Mr. Commons with Post 14. It will be the first 14 horse field since 2005 when Afleet Alex came back strong to win the Preakness after finishing 3rd in the Kentucky Derby. As speculated, the field will feature 5 horses coming out of the Kentucky Derby and 9 ready to make their Triple Crown Debut.
Welcome to Baltimore
Two planes arrived in Baltimore today from Louisville, KY carrying eight Preakness Contenders. The horses arriving at Pimlico today and looking to get settled in before racing on Saturday are: Midnight Interlude, Dance City, Dialed In, Flashpoint, Astrology, Mr. Commons, Shackleford, and Sway Away. Making the longest trip and picking up the most frequent flyer miles was Mr. Commons who originally departed from home, Hollywood Park, on 5/17. He picked up a good night stay at Churchill Downs last night, before jogging over the track this morning and boarding with the rest of the gang. Also arriving today by van from Belmont Park was Mucho Macho Man.
There is always a horse or two that will catch your eye after their final breeze before a big race. Most notably before Preakness 136 is Midnight Interlude. Clocking the 2nd fastest 3F work of the day, he breezed over a Sloppy track in a final time of 35.60 at Churchill Downs on 5/16. The impressive work seemed to eliminate any last minute chance that trainer Bob Baffert would withdraw prior to today’s entry deadline. The day before, Dance City breezed over a Good track in 1:00.20. Yesterday, Mucho Macho Man also put together a solid final breeze over a Sloppy training track at Belmont. In his final drill before leaving for Pimlico he completed 4F in 49:28. Graham Motion continues to stick with galloping his colt, Animal Kingdom, at Fair Hill Training Center. Not completing a true breeze since 4/30 at Churchill Downs (6F 1:13.00) the Kentucky Derby champ, according to his trainer, looks great. He is not expected to arrive at Pimlico until Saturday morning.
3 Days until the Preakness Stakes, stay tuned as more Race Analysis and Morning Line odds coverage is still to come.
